Here are four of baseball’s legendary figures from the first decades of the 20th century, represented in the great candy issue of the era, the 1922 American Caramels Series of 240 that was arguably the most important issue of the decade. The 2-by-3 ¼-inch cards include Harry Heilmann (Very Good), Gabby Hartnett (Very Good – mk) and Billy Southworth (Very Good – mk); the fourth card of George Sisler is significantly smaller at 1 7/8-by-3 1/16 inches and is blank backed. It is also printed in black ink on white stock, rather than the tradition green ink on green stock for American League players in the issue.
