Here’s an impressive array from one of the more difficult strip card issues, the W9316 issue that was not part of the original American Card Catalog and remains an enigmatic element in a traditionally tough genre. The lot features four Hall of Famers in the mix, five if you count World Golf Hall of Famer Walter Hagen, who turns up in a 1925 W590 card. The array includes 8 of the 10 cards constituting a complete set of the 1 ½-by-2 7/16-inch W9316 Series, missing only the cards of Schalk and Schang to be complete. The breakdown: 1920 W520 (2) – 1 3/8-by-2 ¼ inches – Gonzales – Poor and Bancroft – Fair; 1920 W519 Numbered (3) – 1 ½-by-2 ½ inches – No. 12 Murphy, No. 13 Frisch and No. 16 Morton – Poor; 1920 W522 – 1 3/8-by-2 ¼ inches – Kauf – Good; 1921 W9316 (8/10) – 1 ½-by-2 7/16 inches – Veach, Baker, Robinson, Griffith, Johnston, Cadore, Sisler and Barnes – Poor; and 1925 W690 Walter Hagen – VG-Ex.
