Here’s an artifact nearing its 100th birthday, a spectacular image of the year’s World Series managers, John McGraw and Bucky Harris, shaking hands at the the Fall Classic. The 8-by-10-inch black-and-white photograph was used for the cover of the December, 1924 issue of Baseball Magazine, the prestigious publication that tracked the major league scene in incredible detail and was arguably the most important magazine of the period. The first-generation historic image carries stamping on the back of “Wide World Photo,” along with numerous handwritten notations from editors and pressmen; while the photograph would be designated as Poor because of a 2-by-3-inch square cut out of the upper right-hand corner, it presents much better than its technical grade. Included with the lot is an actual copy of the December 1924 Baseball Magazine featuring the photo on the cover; the magazine is in Fair condition. The photograph carries additional provenance of an official hologram from the Baseball Magazine Archives that is affixed to the back.
