November 18, 2021: Fall Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/18/2021
Presented is the iconic 1957 Topps Football issue, the groundbreaking set that would serve as a launching point for countless collections with the introduction of the now-standard 2 ½-by-3 ½-inch format. The offered set actually presents quite a bit better than its technical overall grade, with a significant percentage seemingly within the Excellent to Ex-Mt range, nearly ¾ of the total. Of the 18 or so card deemed Poor, virtually all of them present a good deal better and closer to the wider range, but wind up saddled with the lower designation because of paper loss and/or residue on the card backs from having been removed from a scrapbook. Overall, the condition comes out to 3 percent Near-Mint, 31 percent Ex-Mt, 40 percent Excellent, 13 percent Very Good and 13 percent Poor. Breakdown of keys: No. 1 LeBaron – Excellent, 3 McCormack – Ex, 5 Marchetti – Ex, 6 Nomellini – Ex-Mt, 11 Brown – Ex, 14 Summerall – Ex-Mt, 16 Johnson – Ex-Mt, 18 St. Clair – Nr-Mt o/c, 20 Creekmur – VG-Ex, 22 Van Brocklin – VG, 26 Matson – Ex, 28 Groza – Ex, 30 Tittle – Ex-Mt, 31 Blanda – VG, 32 Layne – VG, 35 Tunnell – Ex-Mt, 46 Hirsch – Ex, 49 Bednarik – Ex-Plus, 53 Ameche – Poor, 56 Ane – Ex, 65 Donovan – Poor, 68 Lary Rookie – Ex, 71 Robustelli – Ex, 85 Lane Rookie – Good, 88 Gifford – Good, 92 Stautner – Ex, 94 Berry Rookie – Poor, 95 McElhenny – Ex-Mt, 104 Morrall Rookie – VG-Ex, 109 Conerly – Poor, 119 Starr Rookie – Poor, 124 McDonald Rookie – Poor, 128 Moore – VG-Ex, 129 Perry – VG, 138 Unitas Rookie – Poor, 151 Hornung Rookie – Poor and 154 Morrison – Ex-Plus.
