Here’s a nice collectible example of arguably the most important and popular non-sport issue of the prewar era, the colorful 1940 Gum Inc. Superman issue that celebrated the exploits of the comic book icon a full decade before he made his Kryptonian presence known on grainy black-and-white TVs. The 2 ½-by-3 1/8-inch cards feature intriguing colorful artwork depicting the Man of Steel in action. The offered set comes out to 5 percent Excellent to Ex-Mt, 25 percent Very Good, 47 percent Good and 22 percent Fair, a fairly typical condition range for how this coveted issue is encountered in mature collections. The difficult High Series from Nos. 49-72 is pretty evenly divided between Good and Fair, with a couple of cards above to Excellent and Very Good.
