Here’s a sparkling example of one of the great Topps football test issues from the 1960s, the oversized 2 ½-by-4 11/16-inch Team test set that depicts 25 NFL teams in black-and-white images and red spot color on the reverse. The offered set comes with each card dutifully entombed and blessed by PSA to the tune of a current No. 3 ranking on the Set Registry. Several of the examples are either the highest-rated with nothing higher or only a single card or a handful higher; in an issue notorious for gum stains on the reverse because of the positioning of the cards in the packs, more than ½ of the set have the (st) qualifier. Here’s the breakdown: PSA 8 (5) – No. 9 Giants (st), No. 13 Browns (st), No. 14 San Francisco (nothing higher), No. 20 Redskins (only one card higher) and No. 23 Patriots (nothing higher); PSA 7 (8) – No. 2 Saints (only one card higher), No. 7 Rams (st), No. 8 Falcons (st), No. 10 Broncos (st), No. 12 Bills (st), No. 16 Chargers, No. 17 Raiders (st) and No. 19 Vikings (st); PSA 6 (10) – No. 1 Packers (st), No. 3 Jets, No. 4 Dolphins (st), No. 5 Steelers (st), No. 6 Lions (st), No. 11 Cowboys, No. 21 Cardinals (st), No. 22 Chiefs (st), No. 24 Bears (st) and No. 25 Eagles (only three higher); and PSA 5 (2) – No. 15 Colts and No. 18 Oilers.
