Here are nearly a dozen pristine Topps football card issues looking essentially as they must have when they rolled off the presses so long ago, all boasting superb color and gloss and presenting in a remarkably uniform and consistent fashion. The 1979 set is broadly Near-Mint to Near-Mint to Mint, with a few Ex-Mt cards; the cards from the other 10 sets from the 1980s are Near-Mint to Mt or better, with a few cards reaching Near-Mint. In short, it’s 5,042 cards looking the way God, or at least Topps, intended, virtually unimprovable and delicious. The 1981 Topps No. 216 Joe Montana Rookie is found in a SGC 5 holder; the 1986 Topps Jerry Rice Rookie is an SGC 7. The breakdown: 1979 Topps (528), 1980 (2 sets, 528 count), 1981 (528), 1982 (528), 1982 (528), 1983 (396), 1984 (2 sets, 396 count), 1985 (396), 1986 (396, plus 1,000-Yard Club subset of 26) and 1988 (396).
