Here are nearly three dozen cards from the coveted 1957 Topps Basketball issue, the company’s inaugural hoops effort and a pioneering offering that predated the company’s later commitment to the game by a dozen years. As one of only two mainstream basketball issues over a two-decade span from 1948-68, the set is filled almost entirely with Rookie cards, including some of the most important of the era. Here’s the breakdown: Excellent-Plus (5) – No. 16 McGuire Rookie, 31 (mk), 35 (mk), 65 and 79; Very Good (17): No. 1 Clifton Rookie, 3 Johnston Rookie, 4 Braun, 7 (mk), 9, 18, 25, 27 Macauley Rookie, 37 Hagan Rookie, 42 Stokes, 45, 47, 50, 55, 66 McMahon, 72 and 76; Good (9) – No. 6, 8, 20, 24 Pettitt Rookie, 30, 34, 40, 41 and 59 Bianchi Rookie; two cards below, No. 43 Hundley – Fair and No. 67 – Poor.
