Here are two pristine examples of what you might call a precursor to the modern, high-end glitzy baseball card, the Topps Tiffany sets that the company launched in 1984, producing each and every card with a remarkably vivid color application that was neatly complemented by a level of gloss previously unimagined. The result was a baseball card head-and-shoulders above its lowly counterparts down through the ages. The winning bidder gets all that in untouched, unmolested, nay even unexamined 1986 and 1987 Topps sets, with the original packaging intact, as is the elegant gold seal that ensures the item is tamper-proof. Inside are glistening pasteboards of all of the great stars of the day; in the 1987 set, that also means spectacular Rookie cards of the likes of Bo Jackson, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro and Barry Larkin. “Just goes to show you what God could do if only he had money” was the probably apocryphal quote often attributed to Moss Hart or George Kaufmann and comes to mind here.
