Presented is an absolutely stunning near set of the popular 1962 Post Cereal Baseball issue, found here in its highly coveted form of complete or partial panels, easing some of the concerns typically attributed to relying on the scissoring skills of an earlier generation of American youth. That means blazing cards of most of the legendary figures of the period, headlined by a pristine three-card panel with Mickey Mantle and Willie McCovey, five full seven-card panels that include: 1) with Aaron and Berra; 2) Clemente, Berra and Ashburn; 3) Ford, Wilhelm and Torre; 4) Koufax and Blanchard; and 5) Maris and Francona; plus a six-card panel with Clemente (again), Cepeda and Elston Howard. This was General Mills’ second of three important baseball card sets that would ultimately be a significant addition to the classic 1960s Topps mainstream issues. With such a lofty pedigree comes great cachet, with most of the larger or complete panels reasonably cut well outside the card image surfaces. Even with the smaller panels of five, four or three cards, the cutting is well done and rarely intrudes on card edges. There are a handful of condition outliers, including No. 10 Ralph Terry – Good, No. 60 Gary Geiger – Fair, No. 189 Ernie Banks – Good and No. 194 Ruben Amaro – Fair/Poor. Given the format of panels, there are a total of 248 cards included in the near set, with some obvious duplication, even among Hall of Famers. Overall, it comes out to 15 seven-card panels, 12 panels of six cards, eight panels with five cards, two panels with four cards and nine panels of three. There is obviously some duplication (75), which thankfully includes the likes of Clemente, Ford, Maris, Berra, Killebrew, Cepeda, Torre and Mazeroski, to name a few. Aside from a handful of Hall of Famers (5), many of the missing numbers are Shortprints. The missing numbers (21): Nos. 18, 26, 31, 32, 36, 49 Aparicio, 55 Wynn, 64, 77, 87, 88, 91, 127, 134, 142 Mays, 147 Mathews, 154, 168, 172, 179, 180 and 199.
