The high numbers that set the bar for nearly a quarter century of Topps printing greatly reduced numbers of the final series of each year’s baseball set. In 1952, that standard practice also got a big mix of seeming mythology and fact, with the assertion (factual) that an estimated 400 cases of Topps high-number cases wound up on the bottom of Long Island Sound at the direction of the famed Topps company pioneer Sy Berger. For the next six decades-plus, the difficulty of finding 1952 high numbers has rested on that classic story, and the prices have escalated accordingly. Here are nearly two dozen of the difficult highs in a range of conditions as noted. The breakdown: Very Good to Ex (1) – 322; Very Good (3) – 318, 330 and 335; Good (4) – 329, 344, 355 and 379; Fair (9) – 313, 316, 317, 323, 324, 325, 327, 336 and 360; Poor (4) – 332, 337, 340 and 346.
