This was the final set in Bowman’s brief run in the baseball card business, an extremely condition-sensitive offering that features the wood-grain “television” borders. This set is basically Poor to Very Good, with a couple of dozen cards falling above the range. Many of the “Poor” cards actually present far better than the technical grade, but wind up thusly designated because of pen or pencil writing of uniform numbers and positions for the player in question. Roughly one third of the offering winds up in the Poor category; about one third falls in the good range and nearly a third in VG-Ex. Here is the condition breakdown: Ex-Mt (1), Excellent (21), Very Good (61), Good (105), Fair (30), and Poor (80).
The keys: 1 Wilhelm – Good, 10 Rizzuto – Fair, 12 Campanella – Poor, 23 Kaline – Good, 29 Schoendienst – Good, 33 Fox – Good, 37 Reese – VG, 38 Wynn – VG, 59 Ford – Good, 60 Slaughter – VG, 89 Boudreau – Good, 103 Mathews – Good, 130 Ashburn – Ex, 134 Feller – VG, 168 Berra – Poor, 171 Roberts – Fair, 179 Aaron – Good, 184 Mays – Good, 191 Lemon – Good, 202 Mantle – Poor and 242 Banks – Good.
