This is an extremely intriguing and enormous lot of vintage Topps Baseball cards from key years in the 1970’s and 1980, a lot that holds significant value and should command a good deal of attention and careful examination from bidders. The lot includes several complete sets in very high grades and a blazing 1975 Topps Baseball Near-Set that boasts a roster of some of the nicest 1975’s you will ever come across.
We’ll go through that blazing 1975 Topps partial set first. It is in absolutely stunning condition, Nr-Mt to Mt, with striking bright colors, great photo focus and registration, decent centering and good gloss, and of course virtually no chipping of the condition-sensitive border colors. For the pickiest collector, it offers a tremendous opportunity to pick up most of the popular issue – 595 of the 660 cards – in absolutely wonderful condition. The remainder of the lot features significant groupings of Hall of Famers, stars, specials and commons from 1970-73 Topps, a total of 1,161 cards. Here’s the breakdown: A mostly Nr-Mt grouping of 1970 Topps (197) includes minor stars, a Nr-Mt No. 211 Ted Williams, six League Leaders, an All-Star card and checklist; 1971 Topps (327), essentially Ex to Nr-Mt, with 19 Hall of Famers, five Team cards, five World Series cards, Checklists for Series 1-5 and six League Leaders. Some of the keys: 55 Carlton – Ex-Mt, 100 Rose – Ex, 180 Kaline – VG, 210 Carew – VG, 380 Ted Williams – Good, 400 Aaron – VG, 513 Ryan – VG, 525 Banks – Ex and 640 Frank Robinson – VG. The 1972 Topps Baseball grouping (324) is largely Ex-Mt to Nr-Mt, with 24 Hall of Famers, nine World Series cards, 11 Team cards, 10 League Leaders, and two Awards cards. The Hall of Famers fell within the broader condition range and included Clemente In Action, McCovey, Palmer, Rose In Action, Brock, Cepeda, Gibson, Mays In Action, Killebrew and Killebrew In Action, Yastrzemski In Action, Carew In Action, Seaver and Seaver In Action, Billy Williams In Action, Bench, Jenkins, Carew and Garvey. The 1974 grouping (312) is mostly Ex-Mt to Nr-Mt includes more than a dozen Hall of Famers including Clemente, Rose, McCovey, Bench, Mathews, Kaline, Carew, Billy Williams, Fisk, Gibson, Killebrew and Aparicio. There are also 7 Team cards, 8 World Series cards, 5 League Leaders and a Checklist.
