Flame thrower Ryne Duren was considered one of the game’s best, and feared relief pitchers from the Fifties through the early Sixties. The three time All Star (‘58,’59,’61) helped the Yankees capture their 1958 World Championship. Wearing thick glasses, Duren put the fear of God in hitters when he typically would throw his first warm up pitch over the head of the head of the head of the catcher and onto the backstop “Duren was the standard by how we ranked hard throwers said”, pitching ace Jim Kaat. A hard drinking, hell raiser off the field, Duren later became an addiction counselor.
