Here’s the Crown Jewel of the attractive and coveted Cleveland Indians postwar Picture Pak images, the 1949 Satchel Paige that is found here in a PSA 3 holder but seemingly presents in at least Ex-Mt condition. The 6 ½-by-9-inch treasure is simply stunning in brown Sepia Tone, with the 41-year-old Paige in his windup in a perfectly centered and clean image. Included at the lower-left portion of the photo is as elegant a Satchel Paige facsimile signature as you will ever encounter, with the added historical touch of an extra “l” in his first name. As one of the more prominent and widely distributed Paige artifacts at the time, it’s at least arguable that this particular Picture Pak Paige might have given rise to the most famous Topps baseball card misspelling ever. The iconic 1953 Topps Baseball card No. 220 with the “Satchell” on the front and in the same fashion in the brief and thoroughly inadequate biographical blurb on the back is likely the cause of countless misspellings over the next seven decades. And if you want to nitpick, maybe Ole Satch bears some of the blame as well: though the vast majority of his known autographs are with a single “l,” you can find a couple with the extra one added. The PSA Population Report notes that barely more than a dozen examples of this classic are in higher grades, but as we noted earlier, it’s hard to figure out why this one isn't part of that group. Either way, it’s a monster.
