Here’s stunning artifact from the popular 1961 Post Cereal Baseball issue, found here in its coveted form of a complete panel, easing some of the concerns typically attributed to relying on the scissoring skills of an earlier generation of American youth. Gussy this up with a sparkling card of arguably the greatest player of his era, Willie Mays (plus fellow Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm) and you have the makings of a monster. This was General Mills’ first of three important baseball card sets that would ultimately be a significant addition to the classic 1960s Topps mainstream issues. This panel features seven cards and the typical advertising section, with a roster that includes Mays, Wilhelm and legendary Yankees second baseman Bobby Richardson, plus four players of considerable merit in their own right: Yankee Killer Frank Lary, the boisterous Bronx Bomber and later manager Billy Martin, and standout hurlers Ed Roebuck and Gene Conley; the panel is attractively presented in a PSA 2 holder, with (mk) qualifier, and probably presents in an even better fashion. The qualifier stems from ballpoint pen notations in the ad panel of a numeral, plus “14-oz. Sugar Crisps,” noting the tasty and nutritious origins of this rare treasure.
