How often do you get a chance to snag a genuine piece of memorabilia from The Friendly Confines, in this instance an enormous black pennant for the Pittsburgh Pirates, part of that iconic centerfield scoreboard at Wrigley Field? That’s the scoreboard that Babe Ruth may possibly have pointed to in the 1932 World Series a mere 93 years ago. Our artifact doesn't go quite that far back, but the 68-by-26-inch black pennant is part of the elaborate history of those colorful flags hanging from the yardarm right below Old Glory. The pennants from all the National League teams are arranged in descending order and changed daily during the regular season to show Wrigley’s friendly fans the current standings. While configurations have changed over the decades with the changes and expansion of the National League, this spectacular Pirates piece, with gold “Pirates” lettering 15 inches high on both sides, graced the scoreboard for the first half of the 2019 season, with MLB Authentication Hologram (VS010037) included to insist that is the case. The massive pennant with heavy silver eyelets is in outstanding condition with no significant issues; there is barest whisper of dirt and light staining to the white cloth trim at the left and similarly light wear to the lettering, along with minimal fraying of the gold stitching.
