As the 1960’s unfolded, Topps’ newest ostensible rival in the baseball card business Fleer started trying to elbow its way into the mix. After producing a set based on the life of Ted Williams in 1959, the Philadelphia-based company came out with a set of Baseball Greats in 1960, regular sized 2 ½-by-3 2 ½-inch cards of retired greats, including many Hall of Famers, and the aforementioned Williams, by then in the second year of a five-year Fleer deal and playing his final season in Boston. Though numbered to 80, the set is considered complete at 79, with card No. 80 Pepper Martin not issued with regular distribution. This is a nice representative example of the popular issue, mostly Excellent to Ex-Mt, with the grades of most of the keys listed as follows: No. 1 – Ex, No. 2 Mathewson Ex-Mt, 3 Ruth – Good, 5 Grove – VG, 6 Walter Johnson – Near-Mint, 28 Gehrig – Ex, 42 Cobb – Ex-Mt, 42 Cy Young – VG, 53 Foxx – Nr-Mt o/c, 62 Wagner – VG and 72 Williams – Ex-Mt.
