Shortly after bursting upon the baseball card scene in 1989 with a truly revolutionary baseball card issue, Upper Deck starting branching off into different directions as the decade unfolded, producing truly unique collectibles that seemingly invited legions of new collectors into the hobby. One of the more intriguing elements that the Carlsbad, California-based behemoth unveiled was its imposing production of commemorative sheets, mostly 8 1/2-by-11-inch cardboard sheets that typically portrayed stunning original artwork from many of the top artists working in the hobby at the time. The sheets virtually all have the famous Upper Deck numbered hologram and depict many of the biggest stars from all four sports, often taking note of particularly noteworthy teams, accomplishments or individual achievements. This spectacular grouping of 170 is essentially Ex-Mt to Nr-Mt, often with multiples, with the emphasis certainly to the upper end of the range. Here’s the breakdown: NFL (109), featuring Aikman, Smith, Rice, Montana, Marino and Manny, and various Super Bowl, conference and divisional champions; Baseball (7), including Nolan Ryan, Philadelphia Sports Heroes, etc.; Basketball (35), including Bird, Magic, NCAA Coaches and tributes to a number of NBA Champion squads; and Hockey (19), including nods to several All-Star Game and Stanley Cup champions and a host of great NHL squads from several decades.
