This remarkable lot pays tribute to one of the truly quirky non-mainstream issues of the 1950’s, the Armour Franks coins that were issued with hot dog packages and promptly became a great collectible curiosity almost overnight. Like the celebrated Post Cereal cards that bedeviled youngsters – and harried moms – a few years later, wrestling Armour coins out of packages of weenies was a thankless job, but one that would pay enormous divided decades later. Here then is perhaps that ultimate dividend: a near-set (missing four coins) from 1955 in a spectacular condition range that is essentially Near-Mint and even better in some instances. Coins show nice color and gloss, virtually all free of scratches and without major defect. The 1 ½-inch in diameter coins are found here in mostly the more commonly found colors – red, blue, green, orange and aqua – along with two yellow versions, both part of the nine-coin sub-group that has been third-party slabbed and graded by PSA. In most instances, the version listed is the one more commonly found, with the sole exception – a PSA 7-graded Jim Gilliam Red, being the more expensive variation. Here’s the breakdown of the unnumbered coins, with the near-set listed first and the “extras” in a separate paragraph. Condition is generally Near-Mint, with exceptions also noted : Antonelli Orange, Berra Blue, Crandall Aqua – PSA 8 Near-Mint to Mint, Doby Red – PSA 6 Ex-Mt, Finigan Blue, Ford Blue – PSA 7 Near-Mint, Gilliam Red – PSA 7, Haddix Red, Jackson Aqua – PSA 8, Kluszewski Orange – Ex-Mt, Mantle (Mantel variation) Orange, Mueller Aqua – PSA 7, Reese Aqua, Reynolds Yellow – PSA 6, Rosen Green, Simmons Yellow – PSA 8, Thomas Orange, Trucks Blue, Turley Aqua and Vernon Red. The four missing coins are Jensen, Kuenn, Snider and Spahn. The extras: Crandall Red – Ex-Mt, Doby (2) Aqua and Blue, Finigan Orange, Ford Blue, Haddix Orange, Kluszewski (2) Red and Green – Ex-Mt, Reynolds Aqua, Rosen (2) Aqua and Blue – Nr-Mt and Ex-Mt, Simmons Red, Trucks Red, Turley (2) Aqua and Blue and Vernon Red.
