This is a remarkable, super clean array of 1957 Topps Football cards, a grouping that includes a number of Hall of Famers and stars and boasts an overall condition range rarely encountered with an issue almost six decades old. Two cards have been duly slabbed and graded from the group and offer a nice glimpse of the pristine, almost untouched quality of the accumulation: No. 14 Pat Summerall is an SGC 84 Near-Mint and No. 76 Renfro is an SGC 88 Near-Mint to Mint. The overall condition range is largely Excellent to Near-Mint, but even that downplays the dramatic impact of pristine pasteboards, since almost all of the cards designated as Excellent actually present closer to Near-Mint but are saddled with the lower nod because of very minor gum stains on the back that hardly detract to any degree. It’s the kind of grouping that in the olden days of the hobby would simply have been called Near-Mint or even better. There’s very little duplication in this assortment that simply begs for close examination by serious collectors. The breakdown: Near-Mint to Mint – No. 76 Renfro SGC 88; Near-Mint (14) – No. 7, 14 Summerall SGC 84, 41, 44 (2), 45 o/c (2), 48 o/c, 50, 51, 72, 72 o/c, 120 o/c and 149; Excellent to Mint (12) – No. 9, 13, 23, 27, 33, 37, 49 Bednarik, 69, 73, 78, 110 and 143; Excellent (30) – No. 26 Matson, 29, 33, 34, 35 Tunnell, 36, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43 o/c, 48, 50, 51, 52, 53 Ameche, 54, 55, 56 Ane, 57, 60, 62, 63, 64, 66 (2), 67, 69, 70 and 77; Very Good (4) – No. 1, 19, 42 and 58.
