This lot features a very rare signed, typed letter from Eddie Roman on City College stationary. Roman led City College to two championships in 1949 and 1950 and was later involved in a conspiracy to fix games, before dying of leukemia in 1988. Roman signed the letter in red ink at the bottom. He states in part, "My friends and I used to practice day and night, in snow, in rain, our (sp) in any other type of weather. I really owe my rapid development in the game to the long hours I spent practicing earnestly. I never played basketball 'till my sophomore year in high school." Also included is a Observation Post newspaper page dated March 10, 1950, which pictures the team and includes Roman's signature above his image. PSA/DNA ruled inconclusive on the signature due to lack of exemplars, but we are confident in the provenance from our Long Island consignor.
