Offered is a rare complete set of the quirky 1940 Commando Ranger nonsport issue, designated as R34 in the American Card Catalog. The issue presents depictions of U.S. military action in the earliest years of World War II before the attack on Pearl Harbor and America’s official entry into the war. Crude line drawings with spot color added are featured on 70 different 2 ½-by-2 3/4-inch perforated cards numbered CR1 to CR 70; three different back variations exist and all three are represented within this lot. The cards are difficult to find in this kind of uniform condition; the grouping is essentially Very Good to Ex-Mt, with the cards falling roughly 1/3 of the complete set in each category (VG, Ex and Ex-Mt). Because of the perforation and rarity of the issue, finding it in this higher grade range represents a real opportunity for serious nonsport collectors. The breakdown: Ex-Mt (24) – No. 1, 2, 6, 7, 10, 12, 19, 20, 21, 27, 28, 29, 36, 38, 41, 42, 44, 46, 52, 54, 60, 62, 66 and 69; Excellent (27) – 3, 4, 8, 11, 13, 15, 16, 17, 22, 24, 25, 26, 30, 35, 37, 39, 45, 49, 50, 51, 53, 56, 57, 58, 59, 63 and 67; Very Good (17) – 5, 9, 14, 18, 23, 31, 32, 33, 34, 40, 43, 48, 55, 64, 65, 68 and 70; Good – No. 61; Fair – No. 47.
