By 1958 television was working its way into millions of new households every year and to a large degree was doing it on horseback. This was near the peak of the popularity of the television western and Topps wanted a piece of the ever-growing action. The 1958 issue in the now-standard 2 ½-by-3 ½-inch card format features cards from 11 different TV westerns from the period, typically with anywhere from 3 to 5 or 6 cards from each, though the iconic “Gunsmoke” is featured on no fewer than 15 cards in the colorful set. The cards have a nice uniform presentation and boast card backs that are exceptionally clean, virtually devoid of the ubiquitous gum stains that bedeviled so many Topps offerings of the day. Two different 5-Cent wrappers from the issue are also included (Ex-Mt). Set is roughly ½ Near-Mint and ½ Ex-Mt and Excellent, a wonderful compilation of an important cultural milepost from the 1950’s.
