Presented here is an impressive partial set from the popular 1964 Topps Football issue, a high-grade accumulation of roughly 80 percent of the complete set that is essentially Excellent to Mint to Near-Mint. This was Topps’ first set featuring only the fledgling American Football League, in the middle of its battle with the National Football League at the same time Topps was wrangling with rivals Fleer and Philadelphia Gum Inc. over who would picture the great stars of the day on cardboard. This is an important, historic issue, with this example featuring blazing bright colors and good gloss and a roster that includes nearly a dozen Hall of Famers, many stars and specials. Perhaps a couple of dozen cards have centering that might prompt an upgrade, though not all are off center enough to affix that precise designation. It comes out to 23 percent Near-Mint, 66 percent Ex-Mt or Excellent and only 11 percent below Excellent.
