After almost a decade of producing cards of the NFL, Topps lost that contract to the Philadelphia Gum Co. in 1964, which would produce cards for the older league for four seasons starting that fall. With that introduction comes this final issue in Philadelphia Gum’s historic four-year run, a strong compilation of truly nice condition cards from that final offering from the company’s NFL tenure. It is a handsome, mostly Excellent to Excellent-to-Mint grouping, with some cards above and below the range, cards generally in a nicer condition than this issue is typically found in older collections. The emphasis is clearly Excellent and comprises an overall highly consistent and uniform presentation, with good color and gloss and decent centering. The keys: No. 1 Falcons Team – Very Good, 14 Berry – Very Good to Excellent, 20 Mackey – Ex, 23 Unitas – Ex-Mt-Plus, 29 Ditka – Ex-Plus, 35 Sayers – Ex-Plus, 46 Warfield – Fair (pen marks on back), 57 Meredith – Ex, 79 Nitschke – Ex, 82 Starr – VG, 90 Jones – Ex-Mt, Olsen – Ex, 106 Tarkenton – Ex-Mt o/c, 123 Hornung – Ex, 172 Brodie – Ex, 185 Jurgensen – Ex, and Checklists Nos. 197 and 198 present Excellent, but are fully checked off.
