For fans of the legendary World Series-winning 1960 Pirates, it doesn’t get much cooler than this vintage set of (10) Tag-Ons that commemorate the squad that humbled the 1960 New York Yankees in one of the more bizarre World Series of the modern era. In a brilliantly colorful cardboard “envelope” measuring 16-by-10 inches, fans are urged to “Pep Up Your Wall, Shirts, Books, Mirrors, Any Surace” with the Tag-Ons, which feature 10 of the key stars of the fabled 1960 Pirates team. In a wee bit of schizophrenia, the cover trumpets “The New Plastic Tag-Outs” while referring to the full-color stickers inside as “Tag-Ons,” a bit of confusion that persists at the bottom of the cover when they are again referred to as “10 Tag-Outs in Full Color.” Confusion aside, the stickers inside are presumably in Near-Mint to Mint or better condition, not having been removed save only for photographic purposes. The lineup is as imposing as the item itself, as the back notes with facsimile autographs alongside: Dick Stuart, William Mazeroski, Don Hoak, Richard Groat, Robert Skinner, Bill Virdon, Roberto Clemente, Forrest Burgess, Bob Friend and Elroy Face. Schizophrenia rules once again as the creators – Richard-Lawrence Co. of Pittsburgh – cannot decide between formal and informal surnames, beffudling us with oddities like “William” Mazeroski, “Richard” Groat, or the most startling, “Forrest” Burgess. The entire artifact is in wonderful condition, presenting really close to Ex-Mt, but probably being relegated to a slightly lower technical description because of slight corner wear and the barest of chipping of some of the colorful panels. Hard to imagine any baby boomer Pirates fan being able to resist the temptation offered here.
