It’s one of the toughest hockey issues around, Topps’ first-ever effort from 1954-55 when the Brooklyn-based behemoth decided to produce cards of 60 players from the NHL clubs based in the United States. The cards are 2 5/8-by-3 ¾ inches; this particular grouping, with some presenting very uniformly and seemingly in Excellent to Ex-Mt condition, is jostled by an apparent trimming effort by a collector that reduced the vertical measurement by about ¼ inch in each case with the bottom blue panel largely eliminated. Such a tough offering typically finds other condition concerns because of its great rarity, and those are noted in the breakdown: No. 5 Kelly – tape residue; No. 8 Howe – paper loss on front and tape residue; No. 16 – tape residue; No. 27 – Very Good to Ex; No. 34 – tape residue; 39 Delvecchio – Ex-Mt; No. 45 – tape residue, No. 51 Lindsay – paper loss and tape residue; No. 57 – Ex-Mt; No. 58 Sawchuck – tape residue; and No. 59 – VG-Ex.
