The very same tobacco conglomerates that launched the 20th Century baseball card phenomenon at the same time produced a wide range of truly striking non-sport offerings, typically with elegant, colorful paintings that depicted everything – and everyone – from actors, Indians, birds, cowboys, and, in this case, Animals. The 2 1/2-by-3 ¼-inch cards are housed in nine-pocket sheets and a binder are found here in the kind of wide condition range that is fairly typical when these are located in older collections, mostly Good to Very Good, with about a half dozen reaching Fair and a similar number to Poor. Two of the cards are blank backed, with some enterprising youngster of 100 years ago penning the names of the animals “Striped Hyena” and “Guib.” Whoever did this is presumably beyond scolding at this time.
