Along with shining the spotlight on pop culture genres of every description, Topps and the handful of erstwhile competitors ventured into the non-sport arena with gusto, and the nation’s time-honored regard for all things military proved to be fertile ground. Parkhurst, makers of hockey cards of considerable merit, turned its talents to the genre, specifically addressing the national fascination with planes, rockets, spacemen and the like. With campy color depictions of spacemen, rockets and satellites, the first half of this issue offers a decidedly different look, with the second section utilizing actual color photographs of US rockets and missiles. That dual configuration offers a compelling presentation of the 3 5/8-by-2 ½-inch pasteboards that provide fascinating information on the card backs about their subjects, neatly offered in both French and English. This is a particularly high-grade example of this important issue, a striking Ex-Mt to Nr-Mt, with the emphasis to the upper end of the sale, all housed in eight-pocket sheets in a binder and boasting a very nice consistent look, with vivid colors and good gloss.
