This is an extraordinary document from the depths of the Great Depression, a scorecard for an exhibition game between the New York Yankees and the minor-league Milwaukee Brewers in Milwaukee. Adding to the intrigue of what would already be a fascinating document are four tiny swastikas that appear as graphic elements on the cover page of this four-page scorecard, folded in the middle to 9 ¾-by-7 1/8 inches. Printed in Milwaukee, a city with a substantial German immigrant population, the inclusion of the relatively unobtrusive Nazi symbols on the scorecard is as intriguing as it is mysterious. This particular scorecard is in remarkable condition, unscored, and presents generally in Very Good, jostled by a tiny nick out of the back page. The Yankee section of the lineup card includes the likes of Ruth, Gehrig and Crosetti printed in the lineup; the Milwaukee Brewers minor-league starting lineup is on the opposite page, with the pitcher and catcher sections left blank in both instances. This is truly an amazing artifact depicting some legendary baseball names, along with a curious nod to the global political situation at the time with the dawn of the Third Reich.
