This is a chance to pick up a couple of attractive near sets from 1969-70 Topps baseball, a pair of nice representations of these important vintage Topps sets, missing some of the key cards but still providing genuine value, especially for a collector who might have some of these star cards lying around looking for a good home. And not all of the Tier One Hall of Famers are AWOL from either offering; the 1969 near set boasts a PSA 2 Mickey Mantle, along with unslabbed cards of Clemente, Gibson, Banks and Rose, while the 1970 lineup includes Yastrzemski, McCovey, Carew, Seaver, Clemente, Stargell and Gibson, among others. The 1969 near set is missing 15 cards and 1970 is missing 16; the missing numbers are listed at the end of the entry. The colorful 1969 issue heralded the beginning of the modern era of Major League Baseball and the departure of one of the most beloved figures of the postwar period: Mickey Mantle, with his final Topps card included here. The near set is in attractive condition, essentially Ex to Nr-Mt, with some falling below and the emphasis to Ex-Mt. The breakdown of keys: No. 1 League Leaders – Ex-Mt, 20 Banks – Ex, 50 Clemente – Ex-Plus, 95 Bench – Ex-Mt, 200 Gibson - Ex, 370 Marichal – Ex-Mt, 410 Kaline – Ex, 424 Rose All-Star – Ex-Mt, 550 Brooks Robinson – Ex-Mt-Plus, 564 Hodges – Nr-Mt, 573 Palmer – Ex-Mt-Plus and 650 Ted Williams – Ex-Mt. The missing numbers: No. 85, 100, 110, 120, 130, 190, 250, 255, 260, 440, 450, 480, 510, 533 and 597. The “Grey Lady” 1971 Topps near set is offered here in a sparkling Ex-Mt to Near-Mint condition, with some below and the emphasis to the upper end of the spectrum. The near set boasts a really nice, uniform presentation, with decent centering and clean backs. The breakdown of the keys: No. 1 Mets Team – Ex-Mt, 10 Yastrzemski – Near-Mint, 189 Munson – Nr-Mt-Plus, 211 Ted Williams – Nr-Mt, 230 Brooks Robinson – Nr-Mt, 250 McCovey – Nr-Mt, 290 Carew – Nr-Mt, 300 Seaver – Ex-Mt-Plus, 350 Clemente – Ex, 380 Perry – VG, 470 Stargell – Ex-Mt and 530 Gibson Ex-Mt-Plus.
