For a serious collector looking to launch on a super high-grade 1972 Topps Baseball set or to upgrade almost any existing one, it’s hard to imagine finding a more tantalizing group from that fabled set than this extraordinary pile from vending. A big group of 15 slabbed stars and Rookies obviously headlines, but the balance – essentially Near-Mint to Near-Mint to Mint, with some below – captivates as well, complete with the coveted “vending bend” that speaks volumes about the pristine nature of the cards. Nearly 20 Hall of Famers are included in the mix, including several among the slabbed array, an imposing roster that includes the likes of Aaron, Mays, Clemente, Seaver, Frank Robinson, Bench, Aparicio, Fingers, Jenkins, Perez, Schoendienst and Dick Williams, to name a few. In a unique issue that boasted a staggering number of Specials that helped propel the complete set total to a record 787 cards, this array sports almost six dozen specials. The lineup of the slabbed cards: No. 1 Pirates Team – SGC 6, 49 Mays – SGC 6.5, 50 Mays In Action – SGC 5.5, 79 Fisk – SGC 5, 237 Yankees Team – SGC 8, 299 Aaron – SGC 6, 300 Aaron In Action – SGC 5, 309 Clemente – SGC 6, 330 Hunter – SGC 7, 410 Jenkins – PSA 7, 451 LaRussa – SGC 7, 433 Bench – SGC 5.5, 437 Wills – SGC 7.5, 441 Munson – SGC 6.5 and 515 Blyleven – SGC 7. In addition to the unslabbed Hall of Famers listed further up in this entry, there are also In Action cards from Seaver, Jackson, Killebrew, Billy Williams and Munson. While there is some limited duplication as might be anticipated, the 464-card behemoth represents roughly 59 percent of a completed set, a remarkable opportunity to put together the colorful classic issue in an overall condition that could hardly be challenged.
