Here are four complete Topps football sets in binders and two from rival Fleer from the end of the decade of the 1970s, sets that look for all the world just as they must have when they rolled off the printing presses four decades ago. The description is virtually identical for all six; the broad evaluation is Near-Mint to Near-Mint to Mint, absolute blazers, with wonderful color and gloss, outstanding photo registration and super-clean backs, with no discernible difference between the Tier One Hall of Famers and lowliest of commons, with the exception of the 1979 Payton card that comes in at Excellent. Call it the stutter that accents the eloquence. The lineup is 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1981 Topps (528 cards each), and 1979 and 1981 Fleer Team Action cards (69 each), a remarkable accumulation that highlights an important period in the expansion of the NFL to the remarkable behemoth that it has become.
