Despite the passage of more than four decades, these unique “cards” portraying major league stars of the period look precisely as they must have when they rolled off the presses. Which is to say Near-Mint to Mint or better, essentially as issued, seemingly coming direct from the factory untouched. Designed to be inserted in soda cartons, the 3 3/8-inch in diameter center disc is encircled by a glove design, with perforations affixing the card to the glove. A tab extends from the bottom of the glove with a checklist for the unnumbered series, which also has promotional and advertising copy. A Midwest regional promotion, the checklist is heavy with Cleveland and Cincinnati players; this fascinating bulk group includes four of the key stars from 72-card complete set: Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose, Johnny Bench and Tom Seaver. While 70 players were issued in a single color, two players – Schmidt and Reggie Jackson – had color variations for the side panels, and four of the five Schmidt variations are featured here. Here’s the breakdown: Tom Seaver (50), Pete Rose (50), Johnny Bench (13) and Schmidt (50). The Schmidt variations are further broken down as follows: Light Blue (30), Green (12), Orange (6) and Purple (2).
