This is a truly impressive accumulation of more than 700 cards from the popular APBA Football Game that was a staple for several generations of young fans and ultimately became a legitimate collectible with the advent of the memorabilia craze of the last 40 years. The cards are in amazing, Near-Mint to Mint or better condition, with blazing vivid red card backs and the appearance of seemingly no evidence of every having been played with. The envelopes from the 12 team sets from 1955 have light pencil notations of “1955”; a few of the envelopes – generally Ex-Mt or better - from this lot have small, unobtrusive tears on some of the flaps. The key element of this lot is a complete set of pristine APBA cards from the 1955 NFL season, with 33-card team sets from each of the NFL’s 12 teams at the time. This represents a remarkable period of the league as it approached the dramatic expansion a decade later, a time that included legendary names like Graham, Gifford, Tittle, Van Brocklin, Layne, Blanda and dozens of others. In addition, there are eight other complete team sets from legendary teams between 1956-69, adding another extraordinary listing of key figures in the NFL leading all the way to the merger with the American Football League and the early years of the Super Bowl. The final two teams in this startling array are All-Time Greats that yield cards of even more historic names like Nagurski, Sayers, Thorpe, Nevers, Butkus and Grange.
