August 6, 2020: Summer Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 8/6/2020
Offered is a handsome single-signed baseball from “The Walking Man,” Eddie Yost, a standout leadoff hitter for 18 major league seasons and then a coach for 22 more. When he retired following the 1962 season, only Babe Ruth and Ted Williams had walked more than Yost; in the ensuing almost six decades he fell eight places and still ranks 11th all time. Along with the Excellent condition single-signed ball, the lot features an official American Baseball Document (Ex-Mt) filled out in Yost’s hand. The lightly-shellacked ball has an attractive blue ballpoint signature on the sweet spot; the 8 ½-by-14-inch document has official stamping noting the date of Sept. 17, 1946, and includes pithy commentary from the 20-year-old that his most interesting experience in his brief tenure in the U.S. Navy in 1945 was “getting out.” Yost was a lifetime .254 hitter, with 139 home runs and 683 RBI. After 14 seasons as a Washington Senator and two with the Tigers, Yost became the first MLB player to appear in a game for the Los Angeles Angels in 1961.
