Presented is a striking example of one of the colorful Star Co. basketball issues that sustained the basketball collecting arena for the interval of 1983-85 after the withdrawal of Topps and the arrival of Fleer three years later. This 1984 Awards Banquet issue of 24 cards includes cards of a host of legendary NBA figures like Abdul-Jabbar, Gilmore, Thomas, Moncrief, McHale and Sampson, and is headlined by four slabbed cards of Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. Those four cards average above BGS 9 Mint condition. The Star Co. issues bridged the gap from 1983-85 with products of singular quality, cards that were never issued in the conventional fashion in packs with gum but rather were sold in individual team or subset sealed bags through card dealers across the country. It didn’t hurt that the company’s tenure coincided with the exploding popularity of Michael Jordan, quickly becoming the biggest star in the history of the NBA and beyond.
