Offered is a truly outstanding example of one of the more difficult Regional issues of the 1960s, the Peter’s Meats 1961 Minnesota Twins “cards” that were produced to mark the arrival of the newly transferred “Twins,” the relocated Washington Senators ballclub that moved westward as the American League expanded to 10 teams that year. The cards were packaged with the company’s varied products and thus remain one of the condition-sensitive offerings of the period. The unique 4 7/8-by-4 ¾-inch blank-backed packaging sheets housed a 4 5/8-by-3 ¼-inch card with biographical information on one side and a full-color photo on the right. Cards were meant to be cut from the packaging sheet that included promotional graphics for Peter’s Meats, meaning that complete uncut versions like this bear a considerable premium. Adding to the allure is the fact that this particular complete set is in remarkable condition, largely devoid of the typical problems that would accompany card issues distributed with meat products; it presents in Near-Mint fashion, with a handful of cards jostled only the tiniest of small creases that barely detract from the presentation, and the No. 1 Zoilo Versalles card, that reveals light scratching on the wax surface. The cards with the tiny creases include Nos. 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10; the No. 18 Harmon Killebrew card has a miniscule small scratch about the length of ½ of a fingernail, a blemish so inconsequential that it would only be cited in the case of a beloved Hall of Famer like Killebrew. In short, the offering is phenomenal, an accumulation of condition-sensitive cards not likely to be replicated.
