This is an important American Basketball Association artifact likely worn by NBA veteran Jerry Chambers during the 1972-73 season and also worn by Billy Harris, either in preseason or 1975-76. The knit jersey has the red and gold elastic piping on the collar and yokes, with San Diego and No. 40 in red and gold tackle twill front and back. It has Rawlings Size 42 tagging on the back of the tail; the “Harris” across the shoulders is seemingly newer than the other tackle twill elements of the shirt. Chambers, a standout college player at Utah and ABA/NBA journeyman for five seasons, wore No. 40 in 1972-73; examination of the shirt’s interior suggests from NOB remnants that this was his jersey that season.
