This is a truly engaging artifact from one of the legendary sports artists of the postwar era, an original drawing by Murray Olderman portraying the Washington Senators rookie phenom Bob Allison towards the conclusion of Allison’s Rookie-of-the-Year campaign in 1959. In addition to the original artwork, which is signed by Olderman in the traditional fashion, a nice-condition copy of the Sept. 23, 1959 issue of The Sporting News that featured the drawing is neatly housed in a plastic sleeve at the back of the framed piece. Throw in a 1961 Topps Allison card with a handsome autograph in blue Sharpie and the trifecta is complete. Produced in his well-known lithographer’s crayon style on a textured board, the artwork boasts the instantly recognizable hallmarks of his talent, with intricate, interlocking panels that reveal various vignettes about the subject. The artwork is in excellent condition, and includes some of the expected editors’ cropping marks and edit notations that are essentially the game-used insignia of original editorial art.
