Presented is an important lot of vintage World Series Wire Photos from 1949-53, that legendary stretch when the New York Yankees captured five world titles in a row and quite neatly transitioned from the Joe DiMaggio Era to welcome Mickey Mantle to center stage in the Bronx. At a time when New York City was the center of the MLB universe, five consecutive World Series crowns seemed like a nice touch. Included with some of the photos – generally 8-by-10 inches or slightly smaller – are often stamping from United Press International or the Associated Press, plus some notations from newspaper or magazine editorial staffers. Most include detailed cutline information from staffers with information about dates, game information and players. Here’s the breakdown (8): 1) Final out of 1949 World Series with Joe Page, Casey Stengel and Johnny Mize; 2) Phil Rizzuto double play in Game One of 1951 World Series; 3) Rizzuto steals third base in two (2) photos of three sequenced panels in Game Four of 1951 World Series; 4) Gil Hodges sacrifice fly in Game Seven of 1952 World Series; 5) Gene Woodling catch in Game Seven of 1952 World Series; 6) Billy Martin bases-loaded triple in Game One of 1953 World Series, signed by Carl Erskine, with “Oisk” notation added; and 7) Joe Collins home run in Game Two of 1953 World Series.
