Offered here is another extraordinary example of the important 1970 Topps Baseball issue, the “Grey Lady” with the delicate borders that so easily reveal the slightest bit of wear. Hard to imagine finding a specimen in better condition than this, a real stunner in essentially Near-Mint to Mint, with some falling below, mostly to Near-Mint, but the overwhelming presentation of several hundred cards that seemingly just rolled off the presses. This is a complementary lot to a near-complete 1970 Topps Baseball set also offered in this auction; these are super clean cards, highlighted by the probability that a significant number could lay claim to genuine Mint status. This is a striking array with considerable duplication that is seemingly pack fresh, with sharp corners, vivid colors and superb photo registration, good gloss and a very uniform and consistent presentation, along with visibly clean, bright-white backs, with blazing yellow and blue spot colors. Like an aggregation likely put together from vending, there are the typical centering meanderings, with some off center and even occasional miscut cards. With 429 different cards out of a total of 864, the array represents roughly 60 percent of a complete set, along with providing more than 400 duplicates, often including key Hall of Famers. In an unusual quirk, the checklist is heavily focused on the first three series and the final two, with many of the missing numbers appearing in Series Four and Five. In the listing below, most of the key Hall of Famers, stars and minor stars present are noted with quantities if appropriate; condition matches the broader range unless noted. The breakdown of keys and condition anomalies: No. 1 Mets Team (2), No. 130 Killebrew – Ex, No. 140 Jackson (2) – Near-Mint and Ex-Mt, 189 Thurman Munson RC PSA 5, No. 220 Carlton, No. 230 Brooks Robinson – Ex-Mt, No. 240 Jenkins, No. 300 Seaver, No. 394 Hodges (3), No. 403 Bunning, No. 458 Rose All-Star – Ex-Mt-Plus, No. 500 Aaron, No. 530 Gibson, No. 580 Rose (3), No. 600 Mays (3), No. 630 Banks, No. 640 Kaline and No. 670 Santo (2), plus Parker (4), Colbert (4), Alomar (4), Matty Alou (6), Felipe Alou (2), Agee (3), Kessinger (3), Rudi (2), Johnson (3), Niekro, Campaneris (2), Alston (2), Mazeroski (4), Pinson (2), Murtaugh (2), Monday (3) and Cuellar (2).
