This is a truly outstanding array of cards from one of the genuine 1970s rarities, the oversized 1971 Topps Greatest Moments, found here in remarkable condition for this curious peripheral issue from the Brooklyn-based card behemoth. Thought to be a test issue from Topps with severely limited distribution in the Brooklyn or possibly Metro New York area, the 2 ½-by-4 ¾-inch cards share the key design element with the mainstream 1971 Topps cards: the infamous full-bleed black borders that so easily show the slightest wear or handling. With that kind of condition-sensitive pedigree and the notoriously stingy distribution that accompanied Topps’ numerous “test” offerings, the Greatest Moments wind up being as hard to come by as their namesake. This group boasts a truly sharp presentation, with crisp red-and-black spot color on the backs and a uniform consistent look, with great photo registration and excellent gloss. The array also features some of the key names in a small, 55-card offering that relies on historic moments rather than traditional player selection criteria. Here’s the lineup: No. 1 Thurman Munson – VG-Ex, No. 15 Pete Rose – Ex-Mt-Plus, No. 19 Al Kaline – Ex-Mt, No. 36 Banks – Near-Mint, No. 40 Yastrzemski – Nr-Mt and No. 41 Mays – Nr-Mt.
