Part of a vast childhood collection that like so many improved in condition in the later issues, this array of 1970 and 1971 Topps Baseball is nothing short of sensational, essentially Near-Mint to Near-Mint to Mint, with perhaps a couple of dozen cards in lower grades of Excellent or below. There is some duplication, including even many of the top Hall of Famers. From 1970 there are roughly three dozen Hall of Famers included in the upper grades, and another half dozen or so below. The offered lot would provide a great opportunity to launch on completing a very high-grade example of the popular “Grey Lady,” a condition-sensitive issue that features virtually all of the great stars of the era. The upper-grade lineup includes: Clemente, Rose (2), Munson Rookie, Bench, Mays, Jackson, Yastrzemski, Seaver (2), Carew, Morgan (2), Carlton, McCovey, Ted Williams, Gibson, Palmer, Marichal, Killebrew, Santo, Perez, Torre, Brock, Jenkins, Wilhelm, Niekro, Billy Williams (2), Durocher, Cepeda, Anderson, Bunning; plus three All-Stars (Bench), three World Series subset cards, 11 Team cards, Wills, Powell (4), Rudi, Carty, John, May, Smith, Tiant, McLain, Felipe Alou, Tommy Davis, Harrelson, Lonborg, Lolich, Oliva, Horton (2), Bonds (2), Murcer (3), Mauch (2), Monday, McDowell, Sanguillen, Oliver, Oliva, Taylor and Houk. The grouping of 1971 Topps Baseball is also outstanding, essentially Ex-Mt-Plus to Near-Mint or better, with perhaps 1/3 of the array falling to lower grades of Excellent or below, a description that affects perhaps 10 or the 40 Hall of Fame cards. There is some duplication, including even many of the top Hall of Famers. There are roughly 30 Hall of Famers included in the upper grades, a group that includes the likes of Reggie Jackson, Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Ernie Banks and a host of others. The offered lot would provide a great opportunity to launch on completing a very high-grade example of the exceedingly condition-sensitive issue that features the black borders that so easily reveal even the slightest wear. The upper-grade lineup includes: Ryan (Excellent), Jackson (Ex-Mt-Plus), Rose (2, Near-Mint), Bench (2, Ex-Mt-plus and Ex), Banks (2), Frank Robinson, Gibson (2), Torre (3), Carew, Killebrew, Marichal, Stargell, Seaver, Brock, Jenkins, Santo, Palmer, Anderson, Wilhelm, Lemon and Schoendienst, plus 11 Team cards, three Checklists, Smith, McCarver, Sanguillen, Felipe Alou (2), Jim Perry (2), Harrelson, Tommy Davis, Houk, Rudi (2), John (2), Ellis, Murcer, Murtaugh, Allen (2) and Oliva.
