Here’s a collection that will be recognized by countless hobbyists: a massive accumulation filled with often lower-grade baseball Hall of Famers and stars, typically without much method to the madness but still an enormous opportunity for bidders to find countless key cards and Rookies from many of the greatest stars of the era. Just to keep everyone on their toes, there are also a dozen or so football Hall of Famers and even a couple of hockey cards, like the overwhelming baseball group dominated by some of the biggest names in those sports. It’s the kind of lot that argues for a good deal of close examination, but a bit of diligence can pay dividends for the winning bidder. The condition range starts out at Good to Very Good, and like a lot of childhood collections improves a bit with the passage of time. In this instance that means several hundred cards above the range at Excellent, Ex-Mt and even Near-Mint. Here’s a broad breakdown (Topps unless otherwise indicated), with card counts approximations: About two dozen cards from 1953-59 Topps (26) includes 1956 Topps of Ford and Mathews, a 1957 Topps Aparicio (Good), 1958 Topps cards of Drysdale, Doby and Hodges, plus 1959 Topps of Clemente (2), Frank Robinson (2), Books Robinson (2), Ford, Fence Busters and the Aaron Thrill card; 1960 Topps (14), including Gibson, Cepeda (2), Ashburn, Berra, Frank Robinson, Killebrew, Mazeroski, Yankees Team and Rival All-Stars; 1961 Topps (23), including Gibson, Frank Robinson, Killebrew (2), Fox, Cepeda (2), Mazeroski, Groat, plus Mantle World Series HR, Mantle MVP (and seven other MVPs), three League Leaders and the Maris All-Star (Fair); 1962-66 Topps (16), including 1962 cards of Killebrew, Brooks Robinson, Wynn, Banks, Kaline and two Babe Ruth Story – a 1963 Mantle (Poor), a 1965 Carlton Rookie and 1966 cards of Brooks Robinson, Rose, Hunter, Brock and Ford; 1967 Topps (15), with Banks, Ford, Kaline, Frank Robinson, Carlton, Brock and two Checklists; 1968 Topps (12), with Carew, Kaline, Yastrzemski (2), Jenkins, Maris, two All-Stars and a League Leader; 1969 Topps (16), Mays (2), Jackson Rookie (2, Poor and Trimmed), Clemente (4), Banks, Brock, Gibson and three All-Stars; 1970-79 Topps (56), including a 1970 Seaver; 1971 cards of Aaron, Killebrew, Blyleven Rookie and Fingers; 1972 cards of Mays, Fingers, Ted Williams and Aparicio; 1973 cards of Ryan, Carew, Yastrzemski and Carlton; 1974 cards of Winfield Rookie, Schmidt (2), Ryan, Parker, Carew (2) and Brooks Robinson; 1975 cards of Schmidt, Rose, Brock and 1957 MVPs – 1975 Minis of Bench (3), Yastrzemski, Jackson, Munson and Rose; 1977 cards of Brett, Jackson (2), Yount, Rose and Ryan; 1978 cards of Murray Rookie, Schmidt and Brett; and a 1979 Murray. The Football and Hockey subgroup includes: 1967 Topps Tittle, 1959 Topps Tittle (3), 1960 Topps Gifford (2 m/c) and Gregg (3),1961 Topps cards of Jimmy Brown and Jack Kemp, plus 1967 Philadelphia Gum cards of Jurgensen and Hays; the three hockey cards include a 1969 O-Pee-Chee Howe All-Star, 1971 O=Pee=Chee Howe and a 1976 Topps Orr. A large group of approximately 1,500 cards is from all years and mostly baseball, but several hundred cards from basketball, football and hockey, plus non-sport. The final element is the largest subgroup of nearly 2,000 cards is primarily from 1968 Topps to 1971 Topps, and this array improves in condition, with literally hundreds of Excellent to Ex-Mt cards, with some below and quite a few above to Near-Mint. The breakdown: 1968 Topps (180), a better condition array, Ex-Mt to Near-Mint, with many HOFers, stars and Specials; 1969 Topps (400), Good to Excellent, with HOFers and Specials; 1970 Topps (900), a bit better condition, with many HOFers; 1971 Topps (450), with many HOFers; a final element in the lot is almost comic relief, almost three dozen (35) 1933 Goudeys that have been subjected to much more than the typical ravages of time, including holes punched, gashes, bite marks, corners chewed away and, for quite a few, they have apparently been set on fire. Among the victims, are five Hall of Famers, bless their hearts.
