This is an opportunity to pick up an attractive near set of the coveted 1959 Fleer Life of Ted Williams issue, an array in essentially Ex-Mt to Near-Mint condition, with quite a few reaching the upper end of the spectrum at Near-Mint and a few below to mostly Excellent, and the emphasis to a strong Ex-Mt. The 1959 Fleer issue was the company’s inaugural effort in producing major league baseball cards, which they launched with a five-year exclusive contract with the great Ted Williams as he approached the end of his fabled career. Fleer’s charming “Life of Ted Williams” set was sold in packs and through vending machines, offering an 80-card set of standard-size cards, with each and every one depicting Teddy Ballgame. The set is generally sold as “complete” with 79 of the 80 cards; No. 68 was withdrawn from production because of contractual conflicts with Topps. The five missing numbers are: No. 11, 28, 43, 60 and 70. Breakdown of keys and condition anomalies: No. 1 VG-Ex, 2 – Ex-Mt-Plus, 6 – Ex-Mt-Plus, 9 - Ex-Mt-Plus, 17 – Near-Mint, 20 – Good, 39 – Nr-Mt, 51 – Very Good, 52 – Excellent, 63 – VG-Ex, 74 – VG-Ex and 75 – Nr-Mt.
