July 15, 2021: Summer Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 7/15/2021
Offered is a high-grade example of the coveted Dick Groat Hartland Statue, arguably the rarest in the acclaimed series of plastic figures and certainly one of the most expensive of the genre. This Groat example is simply superb, easily Near-Mint and exhibiting an almost-white patina. This figure, like the entire array of nearly a dozen Hartlands offered in this auction, stands properly without incident. The figures were produced by Hartland Plastics in Hartland, Wis., from 1958-63, yielding a series of 18 pieces picturing 17 of the great stars of the era and Babe Ruth. Produced from resin plastic and offered for sale in ballparks and variety and department stores for around $2, the hand-painted figures – generally between 6 ½ to 8 inches, may have started out as a toy but by the 1970s had become a full-fledged and popular collectible for serious hobbyists. The Hartland lineup includes Aaron, Aparicio, Banks, Berra, Colavito, Drysdale, Fox, Groat, Killebrew, Mantle, Maris, Mathews, Mays, Musial, Ruth, Snider, Spahn and Williams.
