He was best known for his hitting prowess and rotundity, but here’s a signed contract from Robert “Fatty” Fothergill for use of his name on gloves or mitts from the famed Draper-Maynard Company of Plymouth, N.H. The single-page contract on Draper-Maynard letterhead notes that Fothergill will be supplied gloves or mitts according to his specifications for the princely sum of $1 each. In accordance with that, Draper-Maynard was allowed to use his name on gloves, mitts or advertising materials. Dated Sept. 14, 1932, the letter bears a handsome Bob Fothergill autograph making it all legal. The 8 ¼-by-11-inch contract presents in Ex-Mt fashion, but has a tiny knick off the lower right-hand corner and punch holes on the left side from internal company handling. Fothergill had a distinguished 12-year major league career, batting .325 lifetime for the Tigers, White Sox and Red Sox. Full LOA from BAS.
