July 15, 2021: Summer Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 7/15/2021
Here’s a collection that will be recognized by countless hobbyists: four aging binders filled with often lower-grade football Hall of Famers and stars, typically without much method to the madness but still an enormous opportunity for bidders to find countless key cards and Rookies from many of the greatest stars of the era. It’s the kind of lot that argues for a good deal of close examination, but a bit of diligence can pay dividends for the winning bidder. Given that disclaimer, here’s a broad breakdown (Topps unless otherwise indicated), with card counts approximations: Binder No. 1 (70), mostly Hall of Famers, broadly Good to Very Good, with some above and below, including 1951 Bowman Hirsch (Excellent), 1955 Bowman Summerall Rookies (2), 1957 Layne, 1958 Blanda, 1964 Philly Ditka, 1965 Philly Starr and Hornung, 1969 Starr, 1970 Simpson Rookie (2), 1972 Sayers (2) and Staubach, 1978 Dorsett, and five (5) Unitas cards – 1964 Philly, 1970, 1971 (2) and 1972; Binder No. 2 (750), mostly Good to Very Good, with some above and below, primarily 1962-71 Topps, pretty evenly distributed through the years, plus a significant number of Philly Gum from all four years and a few Post Cereal. Estimate of six dozen Hall of Famers; Binder No. 3 (600), 1972-83, same general condition description but improves a bit in the 1970s, including 40 Hall of Famers; Binder No. 4 (6) Hockey cards, including 1969 Topps Howe and Hall (VG), 1972 Topps Clarke (Good), Esposito (Ex) and Dryden – Ex-Plus.
1962-72 Topps and Philly Gum Football Childhood Collection, 200 HOFers, Some Hockey (1,425)
